Watson on his fun on-course style

December 21, 2011 -- With the 2012 PGA TOUR season just weeks away, the Man In The Black Hat thought it to be a good time to bring the fashion file up to date, starting with an examination of the style exploits of Bubba Watson.

Canadian dispatch: Host country boasts hopefuls in RBC Canadian Open

July 21, 2011 -- With the PGA TOUR in Canada this week for the RBC Canadian Open, PGATOUR.COM decided to ask its Canadian correspondent, the Man In The Black Hat (that's me, aka Chapeau Noir), to give us his take on the state of golf in his home country (for realz!).

What Ashworth has in the works

July 13, 2011 -- Just when you thought it was safe to sneak in a quick nine in that tattoo-inspired 'polo' shirt, The Man In The Black Hat returns from hibernation this week to bring you a much needed TOUR style update. Since our last update in April, additional evidence of the importance golf fashion plays on the PGA TOUR has come to light.

Hybrid golf shoe solutions gain traction

April 13, 2011 -- One of the earliest references to a spiked golf shoe was published in 1857 in the Scottish periodical 'The Golfer's Manual'. The manual simply advised those new to the game to "wear stout shoes roughed with small nails or sprigs to walk safely over slippery ground." Concerns over the quality of putting surfaces resulting from shoe "sprigs" soon followed.

Poulter details big plans for clothing company

March 22, 2011 -- If you sit back in your club chair and put your feet up on that ottoman for a moment to think about it, golf pretty much stands alone in allowing players to demonstrate their personal style to a level that can't be matched by athletes in team sports.

Is what's good for Bill Murray good for you?

February 17, 2011 -- Everybody loves Bill Murray, and why not? He's personable, and of course he's funny, and perhaps more importantly for most of us, he lives up to every expectation we have of the man who brought us the superintendent stylings of one Carl Spackler in Caddyshack.

Giveaways, shoe trends and more

February 2, 2011 -- Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the golf course, wearing those double-pleated khakis and that oversized mercerized cotton polo that you received for participating in that corporate outing in 1998, the Man In The Black Hat is back for 2011.

According to ClubLink Life, "He’s haberdashery’s answer to David Feherty...or maybe not. he’s definitely patriotic! Meet Mike McAllister."

Winter 2010: A golf clotheshorse's guide to the modern art of self-gifting

At this time of year, holiday truisms are trotted out for your consideration more often than your aunt’s dry-as-dust fruitcake. When it comes to gift giving, among the most popular is the adage that “it is always better to give than to receive.”

Bah, humbug.

Fall 2010: Taking The Great Canadian Golf Apparel Challenge

So there i was, standing in front of my closet at just after sunrise on the last Saturday in June, making an uninspired attempt to figure out what to wear.

« CNG Ticker: Open Edition »

John Daly gets patriotic during the final round of the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews, Scotland. (Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Europe) With the 2010 Open in the books, and Louis Oosthuizen running away and hiding with the Claret Jug in his non-descript Ping apparel, apparently on horseback if his wife's riding boots are any indication, Chapeau Noir is in the mood for an all ticker post tonight.

But first, here's your John Daly Loudmouth Golf trouser recap - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday pictured at right.

We assume Sunday's stars and stripes are custom for Daly from Loudmouth, and if they are, don't be surprised if you see them in their range sooner than later - just because that's just the kind of thing Loudmouth isn't afraid to do.

JD's girlfriend was with the program on Sunday too, as she had been all week, wearing matching Loudmouth gear in support. While Loudmouth may not be Chapeau Noir's cup of tea (he prefers Marks and Spencer's), there is no arguing with the attention the brand gets from television and radio broadcasters alike - they all have something to say about what John wears now, and a little free advertising never hurt anyone.

The only thing he was missing from Daly's Sunday best (?) were these American flag-motif shoes, as worn by a spectator on Sunday.

Luke Donald is a major star when it comes to golf fashion, and one of these days, he will surely play as good as he looks in RLX ...

Chapeau Noir wonders if one day we will be as bored of Rickie Fowler's Sunday orange as we are now of Tiger's Sunday red. Fowler may have a lot of catching up to do in the major wins department before that happens, but the enduring appeal, or lack thereof, of orange alone will get him there twice as quickly. Seems that young Fowler has ethics issues of his own though, all be they not nearly as salacious as Woods. Read here about Fowler's last minute, greedy withdrawl from this coming week's Canadian Open ...

Nike man Trevor Immelman looked great on Sunday in grey ...

A blast from Ryder Cups past came thanks to Ignacio Garrido, looking good in Lacoste. It's a shame that he lost the plot with a poorly chosen hat ...

Someone should have told this dude to put the business end of that rake to good use on Marcel Siem's pony tail, just for shiggles ...

Bet you didn't know that Henrik Stenson is up for the role of Action Man - in Hugo Boss of course ... speaking of Stenson, he might have been under the impression that he was to be part of a team threeball on Sunday, but ended up being the odd man out to the pairing of Ricky Barnes and Rory McIlroy. Robert Karlsson also went with the same motif. Chapeau Noir understands that color trends happen, but are we that shy of colorways in 2010 that guys are going to have to start calling each other before rounds?

Full Cleveland action from US Open winner Graeme McDowell, pictured on Sunday without his now trademark cardigan - the manufacturer / distributor of which remains a mystery, despite numerous emails from Chapeau Noir readers. CNG continues to endeavour to find out the source!

Chapeau Noir kinda forgot that J Lindeberg poster boy Camilo Villegas was even playing on the weekend. Time to either step your game up, or add a bit of color Camilo!

Finally, there has been plenty of talk of belts on chapeaunoirgolf.com during the past year or so, but this one has to be the best ever, even if it doesn't match. Well done Louis!
