Undressing golf's dress code

March 24, 2012 -- The most iconic golf style photograph I can think of is one of Sean Connery, circa 1962, sporting a driving cap, and a vibrant red jumper paired with turned up denim, with a golf bag slung with style over his right shoulder.

« Spieth Rocks The Double Pleats »

Jordan Spieth completes his round. Chapeau Noir struggled to break 80 when he was 16. Sadly, not much has changed. (May 21, 2010 - Photo by Darren Carroll/Getty Images North America) Win or lose this week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship this week on the PGA Tour, the story starts and ends with 16 year-old Jordan Spieth, who sits T7 after three rounds at -6.

As he should, Spieth lets his game rather than his attire draw all the attention. If first impressions are anything to go by, he's the of kid we'd all want dating our teenage daughters.

Chapeau Noir admires Spieth's conservative and respectful clothing choices, today's double pleated cuffed trousers included, because all too often phenoms turn out to be all about style, and not enough about substance.

If Spieth does become known for more than than one weekend in May when he was just 16, there will be plenty of time for Chapeau Noir to critique his style. For now, it's just fun to sit back and watch, because there is something about this youngster with game to burn, whose mother likely still lays his clothes out for him in the morning, that bears watching.

CNG Ticker: Manuel from Miami recently emailed Chapeau Noir asking after the colorful bucket hats worn by European Tour member Peter Gustafsson.

This stylish golfing Swede (does such a thing as Swedish golfer who lacks style even exist?) wears Bunker Mentality, and word direct from the Bunker is that Gustafsson picks up his bucket hats wherever and whenever he can.

However, Gustafsson has asked the creative folks at Bunker Mentality to create a selection of bucket hats bearing his name.
