CNG In The Press

Chapeau Noir has provided insight on golf fashion trends in the following publications:

Edinburgh Scotsman - July 14, 2010 - Dressed to a tee: Fashion at the Open, By Alice Wyllie

"It's generally accepted that if you look good, you feel good - which can then translate into playing better golf," he says.

Compleat Golfer (South Africa) - August 2010 - A Flash In The Pants

"When choosing your belt buckle, feel free to express your personality, but be honest with yourself in regard to your personal dimensions. Gents a dessert or two over 36 inches in the waist should try to avoid larger-scale buckles... there's no need to draw attention to an already prominent area."

« CA Championship Observations - Round Two »

Billowy Bill Haas

Bill has during the second round of the CA Championship. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images North America)Today Chapeau Noir examines the wardrobe plight of one Bill Haas. Only 28, Haas seems to have gone to the Vijay Singh school of golf apparel - that is, supersized.

Haas wears Peter Millar, a formidable clothier that is held in high regard. It is a shame that Haas seems more comfortable in a shirt that seems two sizes too big.

It is incomprehensible to Chapeau Noir that a fit young man under the age of 30, who plays professional golf for a living, would dress in this manner.

As a general rule all men, at some point in their lives, turn into their fathers - but not at 28.

From the look Haas presents (at right) during second round action at the CA Championship at Doral, he could very well be wearing hand-me-downs from father Jay Haas, though Jay is listed as three inches shorter than Bill, so the trousers would be Matt Kuchar-esque if that were the case.

Frankly, what works for Jay simply doesn't work for Bill - and nor should it! So what could be Bill's excuse?

Bill may be more comfortable in traditional golf wear, which is fine, but let's find some that fits, some that doesn't make him look like he's trying to hide man boobs and a beer gut.

Chapeau Noir isn't looking for Haas to go to any extremes - we have enough traffic pylons littering the fairways these days.

There are so many great options out there for Bill that wouldn't take him out of his comfort zone.

A company like Abacus or Dunning could do wonders for Haas, as either brand would tastefully modernize Haas's positively frumpy wardrobe. Friend and golf photog extraordinaire Robert Matre rightly suggests Travis Mathew or, if Bill wants to push the envelope, the edgier side of Ralph Lauren in the Polo RLX line as viable options.

Chapeau Noir will keep an eye on Bill, but if you are aware of any others in need of an intervention, please pass along your suggestions.

What a Difference a Day Makes

Yuda Ikeda, round two at the CA Championship. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images North America)Yesterday, Yuda Ikeda made his first appearance on CNG, and it was not an auspicious debut.

Day two proved much better for Ikeda, showing us how color can work for you rather than against you.

Chapeau Noir was also pleased to see Ikeda wearing his hat properly - straight and snug.

CNG kindly requests that Ikeda never place his hat upon his head in the manner by which he did yesterday - unless of course he was emulating the street-stylings of one Justin Leonard.
