Hybrid golf shoe solutions gain traction

April 13, 2011 -- One of the earliest references to a spiked golf shoe was published in 1857 in the Scottish periodical 'The Golfer's Manual'. The manual simply advised those new to the game to "wear stout shoes roughed with small nails or sprigs to walk safely over slippery ground." Concerns over the quality of putting surfaces resulting from shoe "sprigs" soon followed.

From the 'I can't believe I missed this' category, here is a look back at the custom golf shoes four American Nike players were wearing at the Presidents Cup last weekend in San Francisco, furthering the notion that we as consumers can't really buy exactly what the pros wear, at least not all the time.

I place the blame for missing these squarely on my indulgence in the fine Canadian Thanksgiving feast I had the pleasure of sharing with my family.

As I have not captioned the images, try to guess which shoe belongs to which player, before you click through to the source on Twitpic - for prestige. Enjoy...
