Taking a look at the oldest golf apparel brand in the world

By Stuart Goldstein, Raker Goldstein -- It is not every day that an apparel brand can trace its heritage back to 1848. Not every brand though is Tom Morris.

Tom Morris is often recognized as the founder of the modern game, was a four time Open champion, legendary golf course designer and official "Keeper of the Green" of the Old Course at the Home of Golf, St. Andrews Links. He was an innovator, entrepreneur, gentleman and the inspiration behind Tom Morris, the new and exciting collection from Tom Morris International. Working with Tom Morris International to bring this iconic brand to market is TPD International, the developers of Burberry Golf, Aquascutum Golf and Aquascutum Golf for Bentley.

The Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, the line’s first collection, is inspired by Tom Morris’ heritage and his Scottish roots. Any apparel brand based on Scottish roots has to have a tartan and Tom Morris does not disappoint. This unique tartan, specifically designed for Tom Morris, has been created and is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. The Tom Morris tartan, ever so smooth and comfy, uses a blend of grey tones to form a base reflective of the birthplace of Tom Morris. It is infused with a hint of purple and uses four Heather overchecks surrounded by squares of midnight blue. The resulting tartan is not only pleasing to the eye and hand but provides an outstanding tribute to the heritage and legacy of Tom Morris. It is a constant feature throughout the collection.

As one would expect with a Scottish based collection, Tom Morris is rich in wool knitwear, shirts and trousers, scarfs and jackets. The company uses Scottish suppliers wherever possible demonstrating how traditional Scottish techniques can be applied to a modern lifestyle brand. To compliment the rich quality of this apparel line, Tom Morris offers an outstanding collection of handmade leather bags and accessories including belts, wallets and overnight bags. The feel of these leather products is some of the softest and most luxurious we have yet to find.

Attention to detail is not lost as a small Tom Morris figure is located on every piece in the collection.  Sometimes it is visible on the sweater chest but often it is hidden, for example, on the inside of the trousers.  Either way the logo is there as a constant reminder to the legacy that is Tom Morris.

The Tom Morris Collection made its stirring debut at the recent PGA Merchandise show, garnering heavy attention and many accolades. We were quite impressed with the depth and quality of the offerings at the show and look forward to seeing the collection grow and evolve. Considering the collection is 165 years old, we can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Finding the collection may not be that easy, but well worth the effort. It will be available starting July 1stat the original Tom Morris golf shop in St. Andrews, the oldest golf shop in the world and at tommorris.com.
